Resurrecting Famagusta in 1862: An Early Cypriot Project of Urban Modernity
bαhçές Histories* of Cyprus x Cyprus Insula Exhibition
In the first conversation, Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and bαhçές Histories* of Cyprus team, invites you to discover an early Cypriot vision and attempt in 1862 to transform Famagusta from a restricted military town into a bi-communal and cosmopolitan modern city, amidst the challenges that have remained largely relevant until today.
Inspired by the Cyprus Insula Act II, The Uniform Cypriot Insularity on the production and organisation of space, we will explore this completely forgotten local project of urban modernity and discuss how Cypriots themselves took the initiative to develop a common future for Famagusta, which, still today, remain a, if not the most, prominent and tragic symbol of division and desertion of the island.
