Κώδιξ Σχoλείων Λευκωσίας [Codex of Schools in Nicosia]

An important contribution to the intellectual history of Cypriot Hellenism, this edition brings together all documents included in two 19th century educational codices. The two codices, following parallel chronologies, span from 1859 – 1892, namely the formative years of the Modern Greek educational system which coincides with the period of Cyprus’ educational renaissance. They cover the last years of the Ottoman occupation and early years of the British rule, just before the foundation of the Pan-Cypriot Gymnasium in 1893, a breakthrough in the history of Cypriot education. The 465 documents deal with a wide thematic range: correspondence, statutes etc. They document the important educational role undertaken by the Church of Cyprus and the close spiritual relation between Cyprus and the Greek state, as well as with various centers of the Greek Diaspora. Theodoros Papadopoullos has written an extensive introductory essay, along with indexes of proper names and pupils.
