The lecture will look at the development of botanical illustration through time with references to significant artists who have impacted on the evolution and growth of this particular art from the Renaissance to nowadays.

Special reference will be made to Elektra Megaw’s body of work and the illustrated Herbarium she herself donated to the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation since 1987. The collection includes 51 aquarelles the artist had painted within the general topic “The Wildflowers of Cyprus”. The aquarelles belong to the Foundation’s Cyprological collections and constitute works of art in themselves. Rendered in their actual size, with botanical precision, the flowers are accompanied by texts of botanist Desmond Meikle in a collective edition titled "The Wild Flowers of Cyprus".

“Collectors”, the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation series of events, endeavours to present and promote the Cyprological Collections kept by the Foundation, as they constitute one of the most significant and largest pieces from the island’s cultural heritage, as well as to highlight Private Collections that reflect important though unknown aspects of Cypriot history and culture. The aim is to cultivate and enhance love for collecting amongst interested parties and the public and to convey the basic principles that will contribute to both the creation and preservation of our civilization.
