Andreas Patsalides Hall

Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation in Phaneromeni.

The Colloquium will look at aspects of the economy of Cyprus in the course of the 20th century, focusing on its relatively rapid transition from pre-industrial to post-industrial society and economy.

During the period 1878-1980 (a little over 100 years), the economy and society of Cyprus saw a transition to the colonial period and later to post-colonial years, followed by the 1974 Turkish invasion, the process of reconstruction and a series of global changes (two World Wars, the USA-Soviet bloc opposition, the creation of the European Union etc). Each of the aforementioned landmarks presents an interesting challenge of adjustment to a new environment, often in a violent manner. Therefore, a series of questions are raised, such as the manner in which the Cypriot society adjusted to these changes, as well as the extent of adjustment. The Colloquium endeavours to review the developments and challenges that have complemented the changes and to investigate the manners in which they have been dealt with, mainly during the course of the 20th century.

15 speakers are expected to participate.

The Colloquium is addressed to students and the wider public. A certificate of attendance will be issued to participants.
